USING AN AUDIO INTERFACE + PREAMP

As with any XLR mic, you will need an additional piece of equipment to connect your microphone to your computer: a USB Audio Interface. This takes the raw analogue signal from your XLR microphone and transforms it into a digital signal for your device to work with.

AUDIO INTERFACE

BUILT-IN PREAMPS

Audio interfaces include a built-in preamp, however the level of gain is generally less than +60dB. To get the best results from your SM7B, we recommend adding an in-line preamp to your setup to further boost your gain to desired levels.

IN-LINE PREAMP

The SM7B requires a minimum of + 60dB of gain for best results. Using an in-line preamp allows you to boost the gain of your microphone level in order to achieve the correct signal level.

When using an in-line preamp, you may need to switch on the 48V Phantom Power button on your interface in order for it to work.

SETTING UP YOUR SM7B

1. Mount your SM7B
to a desktop stand
or boom arm.

2. Using an XLR cable, connect
your in-line preamp to
your signal chain.

3. Using a second XLR cable, plug one end into your preamp and the other end into your interface.

XLR CONNECTIONS

XLR cables are shielded cables designed to carry two copies of the audio signal and an earth cable. The signal polarity is switched as it travels through the cable, but before it reaches the end, the signal is then flipped back and combined. This is known as balanced audio or a balanced signal and it provides the highest quality, clean audio without noise or interference!
